District Issues!

Affordable Housing

The 17th district is the poorest Council district in the city.  However, majority of our residents aren’t able to qualify for affordable housing programs due to the high Average Medium Income (AMI) standard set by the city. As your Councilman, I will work to lower the income level needed to qualify for affordable units. I believe in fair housing and safe environments for families of the Bronx. The Bronx is an obvious target for high-end developers and given the history of New York this never ends well. Rents go up and families become more likely to be displaced. I will be a fighter you and the South Bronx

Jobs

With a yearly average income of $27,000 for a family four, the need for job growth will be a high priority of mine during my term in office. I would promote policies that incentives manufacturing companies to increase their footprint in the South Bronx through tax credits and grants to small and medium manufacturers. I would advocate for a special tax zone or empowerment zone status for the South Bronx that includes a lower sales and property tax.

Asthma/Municipal solid waste

If you’re from the Bronx then it’s no secret that broken bottles, plastic bags, paper and old furniture on the side of the street is common. IF YOU’RE also FROM THE BRONX THEN YOU’RE FAMILIAR WITH SEEING more than A FEW GARBAGE TRUCKS A DAY.  HOWEVER, WHAT MOST BRONX RESIDENT AREN’T AWARE OF IS THE AFFECT GARBAGE AND TRUCK TRAFFICS HAS TO THE COMMUNITY. AS YOUR COUNCIL MEMBER I WILL FIGHT TO REDUCE GARBAGE AND THE ASTHMA RATE IN THE BRONX.

Education

The South Bronx has the lowest graduation percentage throughout all NYC. I believe public education should be an equalizing force that gives children from low income families a world class education that children in private schools receive. What NYC spends per pupil compared with private schools is the Civil Rights issue of our era. Children and their needs will be one of my main priorities during my time in office.

Services for Seniors

In New York, our senior centers are a great example of vitality and good government resources. I will fight to protect the senior centers in our community and advocate for programs that focus on wellness, financial literacy and good nutrition. The seniors of the South Bronx are our grandparents, elders and pillars and as Councilman I will work earnestly to protect their interest.

Non-Profit and Small Business

The City has neglected the South Bronx in terms of investment for decades. As your Councilman I will work to procure an increase in small business loans and grants to small business in boroughs outside of Manhattan. I will work personally with our local non-profit organizations in terms of grant writing to secure Federal, State and City funding.
